Trauma in The Primary and Mixed Dentitions

Presented by Kristin McCullough Elliot, DDS, and Alexandra (Lexi) Nash, DMD

Course Description

Trauma in the primary and mixed dentition refers to dental injuries that occur to a child's primary teeth and the transitional stage where both primary and permanent teeth are present, often caused by falls, accidents, or sports activities, with the most common injuries being luxation, fractures, and avulsions, which can potentially affect the development of the underlying permanent teeth if not managed properly. This type of trauma is quite prevalent in young children due to their developing motor skills and increased exploratory behavior. Dentists must perform a thorough examination to assess the severity of the injury and potential impact on the permanent teeth. Depending on the injury type, treatments may include splinting, repositioning the tooth, tooth removal, or monitoring with regular follow-ups. Prompt dental evaluation is crucial to minimize complications and optimize treatment outcomes. Proper pain management is important during the examination and treatment. Informing parents about potential risks and appropriate management of dental trauma is key.
